BlackStar Motorsports is a young, supercharged rocksports team based in Boulder, Colorado, right at the foot of the majestic Rocky Mountains. Established in 2005, BlackStar has racked up an impressive record in both the WeRock (World Extreme Rock Crawling Championship) series and the XRRA (Extreme Rock Racing Association). Due to their success on the track and their popularity with fans, BlackStar Motorsports is one of the most recognizable teams in the countrys.
Of course, the team’s road to popularity wasn’t a smooth street. Instead it was as bumpy and rough as the courses they conquer.
The life of this team wasn’t one to last very long. In 2005, BlackStar founder Weston Blackie headed to Salt Lake City, UT for what would be his first professional event (UROC). However, even after the 8 hour drive, his beloved Jeep was denied at tech inspection due to it not fitting in any of their classes. Blackie would stay to watch the event and saw for the first time many of his heroes. While driving back to Boulder, Blackie knew this was something he wanted to do but would need to find a buggy that was competition ready. Upon arriving back in Colorado, Weston was tipped off on someone selling a very competitive moon buggy in California. With aspirations to one day compete against his heroes, he was on his way to Santa Rosa with two things in tow, an empty trailer and a brain full of ideas. Enter, the Campbell Ent. Moon buggy.
Dubbed the Wildcatter, was a bright orange (see where the company colors came from?), LS1 powered, moon buggy. Built by famous chassis builder and rock crawler Shannon Campbell. This buggy would propel Blackie’s racing career in both WeRock and the XRRA. In 2006, this little orange powerhouse would rack up top 5 finishes in the XRRA ultimately finishing 2nd in the series (right behind the man that built it), 11th in the world in WeRock and get Wes nominated for both Rookie of the Year and Sportsman of the Year (later he would win Sportsman of the Year). After a year loyal service Wes and the buggy parted ways to make way for new buggy, ProModifed two seater that would better market the team and his sponsors.
Built by Twisted Customs in South Dakota, this two seat chassis is based off the same design as Jason Paule’s most event winning buggy. Known to many as Murphy, the buggy first started life resembling a Jeep TJ, however the similarities are only skin deep. Powered by another Corvette LS1 engine, this buggy is built to do it all. Rock crawling, rock racing, King of the Hammers style racing or flat out booking it across the desert, there really isn’t much that can stop this race car. In the beginning of 2008, with collective efforts of Flatiron Fabrication in Boulder, Co and Hazardous Concepts or Arvada, Co the buggy would shed its Jeep body and take on a whole new form, a Dodge Dakota. The ProMod class is known to many as the NASCAR class of rock crawling and Wes wanted to give the Mopar guys something to cheer about.
More news in 2008, BlackStar added a second vehicle to the fray driven by Flatiron Fab owner Wade Cameron. Competing in the always popular Modified Stock class, Wade and his fiancé Kim “Kimmay!” Jensen are looking to take the veterans by storm in their rookie year.
It has been a long and bumpy road for BlackStar Motorsports, but being rock crawlers, we wouldn’t want it any other way. |
